Farmers oppose laying of petroleum pipelines through farmlands
Opposing the proposal to lay petroleum pipeline through agricultural lands for the Irugur (Coimbatore) to Devangonthi (Karnataka) Petroleum and Petroleum Product Pipeline project, farmers in Chennimalai erected tombstones and performed puja here.
The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has authorised Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to lay, build and operate the pipeline project to carry 3.52 million tonnes per annum (MMTPA) from Irugur that pass through Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. Work has begun recently and people in many areas oppose laying of pipelines through their farmland.
